Hydrant Operation

Opening Hydrants

  1. When accessing South East Water filling stations (EMS) and hydrants which are close to roadways:
    1. high viz apparel and safety glasses are to be worn,
    2. the turning on and activation of vehicle driving lights and warning/hazard lights whilst filling is mandatory.
    3. Car doors are not to be left open whilst filling to reduce the area ‘foot print’ of the vehicle,

  2. Remove cover, cap or plate
  3. Using the correct tool, operate spindle to “crack” the seal between the ball & sealing ring, open slowly allowing any dirt or grit to be flushed before connecting hoses. By operating slowly, you not only decrease the likely hood of any damage to the system by the sudden demand but you also avoid rotating the hydrant ball and it will reseal correctly when you close the hydrant.
  4. Pause for sufficient time to make sure that you have a steady flow. Continue to operate steadily until you have the necessary flow for your requirements. (Note) By opening the hydrant too far the flow is decreased.

Closing Hydrant

  1. Using the correct tool, close the spindle steadily until the discharge stream of water indicates a drop in the flow rate.
  2. Very slowly turn the spindle to closed position and the flow should stop. Be prepared to pause if the flow is erratic and let the system settle down before proceeding. If the flow does not stop completely it is likely that the hydrant ball has rotated and not sealing on the washer or grit has lodged between the hydrant ball and washer. In this case it may be necessary to repeat the opening and closing procedure several times. If this does not work contact South East Water faults and emergencies number 132 812 for assistance.
  3. Replace covers, caps and lids and ensure that the covers are secure and the latch lock is working.

Problems caused by the incorrect operation of hydrants

Burst Mains:

Burst Mains: When hydrants are opened or closed quickly, water hammer is created through the system. This in turn causes the water main to burst and the loss of supply to our customers. The burst also causes damage to private service piping and the general infrastructure surrounding the burst, reducing supply for fire fighting and wastage of a precious resource.

Turbidity:

This means the stirring up of the fine silt deposits within the water main causing a number of water quality issues for residents in the vicinity of the hydrant.

Accountability

Persons or Companies who damage water mains through the operation of hydrants in South East Water areas, or who do not hold a current permit to withdraw water and/or do not follow the operational procedures, will be held responsible for any repair costs. Hydrants should not be left unattended when turned on. When operating a hydrant, the protection and safety of the driver and the general public is to be considered at all times.
